Subject: CELLULAR PHONES-How increment reception?
To: ham-ant@ucsd.edu
I want to increment the recception of my cellular phone. I have a house
on the beach, and there I can't receive the cell service, but 500 meters
near to the cell center, The signal is good. I don't have any montain or
big buildings between the cell center and the house.
How can I increment the recception of my phone. Can I build a special
antenna or probably buy a antenna amplifier to UHF?. How can I connect
that to the phone?
All the answers are welcomed!.
Please!.

Take a look in the _ARRL Antenna Book_, 16th edition on page 16-27.
It describes a top loaded antenna for 2m consisting of 5-1/2 turns
around a 1/2 in. form, a 2" diameter capacitance hat 3" up from that,
and then soldered into a connector, with the inductor 4" above the top
of the connector.
They used brazing rod, a piece of PC board, and a BNC connector, but I
used #12 solid copper wire, .005" brass sheet, and soldered it into a
UHF connector, then filled the rest of the connector with bath tub
cauking.
Sitting in a class room with no windows, and tuning to a repeater 25 miles
away, I could just hear the repeater output with the squelch turned all
the way down with a rubber duck. With this antenna, the meter on the
HT said S7, and I could get into the repeater on one watt out. I looks
a little funny, but is small and it works. I origionally built this
antenna for Railroad Mobile operation, and it works well for that as well.
